Frank Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions in the UK has chosen Israeli screenwriter and director Dekel Nitzan as the recipient of its seventh writers’ apprenticeship programme. Dedicated to nurturing emerging screenwriters, the annual apprenticeship is crafted to empower writing talent on their journey to mastery. Through a comprehensive three-month program, participants delve into the world of screenwriting, gaining invaluable industry insights and practical experience. The heart of our initiative lies in fostering collaboration within a dynamic writers’ room, working on both local and international projects, as well as contributing to the development of new series.
Nitzan, currently based in Germany, having successfully completed the Serial Eyes postgraduate television training program at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). He earned degrees from the Steve Tisch School of Film and TV at Tel Aviv University, including a BA in film studies with a focus on directing and an MA in screenwriting. Nitzan’s journey began as an independent filmmaker in Israel, where he wrote and directed four short films showcased at prestigious film festivals such as Shanghai, Montreal, Flickers: Rhode Island, and Tel Aviv Cinematheque. Notably, he received a nomination at Israel’s Ophir Awards and participated as an alumnus in the Berlinale Talents program.
Recent highlights include a collaboration with Koda Communications, where he contributed to an episode of the TV crime drama HaShotrim (Line in the Sand) for Israeli broadcaster Keshet 12. Nitzan also served as a staff writer for an upcoming drama series by MoviePlus Productions for HOT Cable Communication, the details of which are yet to be announced. Further showcasing his versatility, Nitzan collaborated with Spider in the Web production company Topia Communications, working alongside acclaimed film director Eran Riklis (The Lemon Tree, The Syrian Bride, Zaytoun) to develop proposals and series bibles.
